DTU Pro-Am Carp Slam Attracts Denver Media Attention

August 19, 2009

With the Slam slated for August 22 just days away, the local media are giving the event and the Platte restoration effort a nice boost. CBS 4 News did a great job covering our efforts at South Platte Park. DTU intends to do in-stream improvements as a demonstration site for fish habitat renewal. The preliminary study was recently approved by the City of Littleton and SSPR. Check out the two minute CBS4 video starring VP Todd Fehr at:

http://www.cbs4denver.com/video/?id=60866@kcnc.dayport.com

In a carp fishing coup, Tournament Director Tim Emery was able to hook and land a nice fish within 30 minutes as Denver Post Outdoor Reporter Charlie Meyers looked on. Charlie has been a long term supporter of TU efforts across the state. Read the Post story at:

All of this attention will help DTU and its partners gather both financial and civic support for this major undertaking.

World Fishing Network Press Release

August 13, 2009

WFN: WORLD FISHING NETWORK NAMED OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF

DENVER TROUT UNLIMITED’S SOUTH PLATTE PRO-AM CARP SLAM

DENVER, CO – AUG. 6, 2009 – WFN: World Fishing Network, North America’s only 24-hour fishing lifestyle network, has been named an official sponsor for one of Colorado’s most popular fishing events – the South Platte Pro-Am Carp Slam fly fishing tournament – hosted by Denver Trout Unlimited on Aug. 22, 2009. The goal of the event is to raise awareness and funds for the South Platte River as it flows through Metro Denver.

“For two years the Carp Slam has been held in relative obscurity. Thanks in no small part to World Fishing Network’s sponsorship and promotion, the Slam is receiving recognition around Colorado and the west,” said Tim “Fishman” Emery, Director South Platte Pro-Am Carp Slam. “The buzz for the 2009 event is bringing much needed attention to reclamation efforts on the Denver South Platte River. Players and volunteers are coming out of the weeds to help this year’s fund raising effort.”

The event is open to 15 amateur anglers who will be paired with professional guides from shops throughout Colorado. Teams will randomly pick beats laid out on the South Platte River in Denver. The $250 per angler participation fee includes a day of carp fishing on the South Platte, lunch/after-party at the Fuel Cafe, and the opportunity to be Denver’s Carp Slam champion.

“We commend Denver Trout Unlimited for all of their efforts including this beneficial fund raising event,” said Mark Rubinstein, President of WFN. “We have a long-history of supporting conservation groups like TU, so it is our pleasure to sponsor the event and help raise funds and provide visibility for such an important cause.”

In addition to supporting the event, WFN is providing much needed exposure for the event by advertising it on its website (www.wfn.tv) and sending a camera crew to the event to produce a feature to air on the network at a later date. Other sponsors of the event include: Trout’s Fly Shop, www.Fishexplorer.com, www.theonlinekeepsac.com, Orvis of Cherry Creek and The UPS Store. Additional information is available at www.CarpSlam.org.

New Sponsors! Ross World Wide, Rio Fly Lines, and ColoradoFlyFisherman.com

July 24, 2009

We are getting closer to the big day. I had a little tease on Monday night. I went to look at the river because TrophyRoom.com is going to film an intro for the Carp Slam. The flow was perfect, about 75cfs and clear. I looked off the bridge and saw 15+ fish over 30lbs. No joke! They were happy and eating. Of couse Monday night we had that huge storm, Tuesday morning the river was mud and fish were probably safe from practice sessions. We’ve seen fewer and fewer thunderstorms roll through Denver as the summer has progress, and I suspect by August 22nd the Front Range will be dry as a bone, and the urban South Platte clear as a bell. The sponsors think so too.

Ross World Wide has donated a Essence 690-4 and an Airus 3 fly reel, and again this year RIO Fly Lines is donating their Carp line and 3 packs of leaders to all participants and volunteers.

If you haven’t signed up yet, you better do it soon – spaces are filling up fast!
